SUBCUTANEOUS
INJECTION 101: PREFILLED SYRINGES

STEP 1: PREPARING FOR THE INJECTION

  1. Hand Hygiene: Start by washing your hands thoroughly.
  2. Clean the Injection Site: Use an alcohol swab to clean the injection site (alternating between upper/outer thigh, back of upper arm, or abdomen area 2 inches away from the belly button) and allow the skin to air dry.

STEP 2: PREPARING & PRIMING THE SYRINGE

1. Prepare the syringe:

  • Without removing the cap, hold the syringe in your dominant hand with your thumb on the plunger. The grey cap should be facing up.
  • Push up gently on plunger approximately 3 times to push air to the top of the syringe.

2. Attach the needle:

  • Twist off the smaller portion of the needle packaging (needle cap should still be attached).
  • Twist off the grey cap from the syringe.
  • Firmly twist the needle onto the syringe

3. Prime the syringe:

  • Remove the needle cap to expose the needle.
  • With thumb on plunger gently push up until all air is removed from the syringe and a tiny drop of medication appears at the tip of the needle.

STEP 3: INJECTING MEDICATION SUBCUTANEOUSLY

1. Hold the Syringe:

Hold the syringe like a dart or pencil.

2. Prepare the skin:

Pinch the prepped skin to create a firm surface and insert the needle quickly through the skin at a 90-degree angle.

3. Administer the medication:

Using a slow and constant pressure, push the plunger rod until it reaches the bottom.

4. Remove the needle:

After the injection is complete, remove the needle and safely discard it into an appropriate container.
